Basketball Chat Transcripts
Mike Jordan: Which player
for Ole Miss concerns you the most as you prepare to play the
Rebels tonight?
Cliff Ellis: Ole Miss is a team which is solid all
around. Keith Carter is the go-to guy, but they have a host of
players who can do the job, so I would say we can't center around
one player.
Mike Jordan: Tom, how does it feel to
represent the U.S. in the 2000 Olympics?
Tom Gugliotta: It feels great. Being on the team is
a great honor, to be looked at as one of the best players. As a
kid, always watching the Olympics - especially in 1992 during the
first Dream Team, and now to be a part of one is just something
that I'll cherish for the rest of my life.
Mike Jordan: What team do you find the most
challenging to play?
Tony Battie: Challenging? Hmm. For me, I like any
team with a great crowd, like Utah, because they have a great
crowd, always behind the team. I like going to places like that,
because it's kind of like you against the world. To hit big baskets
and shut the crowd up, that 's the kind of player I am.
Mike Jordan: Mr. Havlicek, what was your most
memorable individual performance in the NBA?
John Havlicek: I don't know if there is any one
that stands out. There are a couple of them -- stealing the ball in
'65 would be one of the highlights. The other would be the
triple-overtime game where I made the bank shot in 1976.
Mike Jordan: What is it going to take to turn
the Clippers around?
Dennis Johnson: I would love to say me *laughs* but
it will take a commitment from the players, coach.... They have to
stay with each other. We know the team has been losing, but they
have to change their mental attitude. Someone has to learn to
sacrifice to win a game. Lamar might need to take more shots, so
someone will have to sacrifice more shots. It takes a commitment to
defense. It's a fixable team...and a fixable team fast. They just
need confidence. I do not know.
Mike Jordan: Does the NBA need another
Michael Jordan to be successful in the future?
Theo Ratliff: I don't think so. If you look at the
pie chart, they have increased revenue each year. They are
definitely not hurting. I think they could promote more guys around
the league. It will never be like with Michael because he was the
first and the first to promote the league like he did.
Mike Jordan: Shaq, how often do you get to
visit your alma mater, LSU?
Shaquille O'Neal: I was last there when I graduated
in December. It is hard for me to get there during the season, but
I try to visit the school at least once or twice in the off season.
Mike Jordan: Larry, what do you think of the newest Boston
hero, Tom Brady? He has joined you and your Celtics teammates and
the Bo Sox legends in Boston hero status by winning the Superbowl,
would you agree?
Larry Bird: I'm very happy for the Patriots. They made a believer
out of me! It's always a good thing to see a young man like Brady
step into the limelight and show his skills. He did a fantastic
job, and is definitely one of the leaders of the team.
